Abstract

Languages combine form and meaning in order to express an infinite number of ideas. Modern linguistics has developed sophisticated methods to probe the formal structure of languages from phonetics to syntax, but the study of meaning remains relatively unexplored. The lack of sophisticated methods to document the semantic structure of languages remains a significant problem for work with endangered languages. Research in semantics is limited by semantic theories that can be traced back to Plato and Aristotle. These theories assume that languages use a universal set of semantic elements to construct meaning. The classical theories cannot account for semantic change and an explanation of metaphor is completely beyond the scope of such theories. In this paper I propose a theory of semantics that puts metaphor at the center of semantics. Rather than create an artificial dichotomy between figurative and non-figurative language, the metaphorical approach to semantics assumes that all languages are figurative. This approach assumes that a basic sentence as “The cat is on the mat” combines figurative language with pragmatic information to communicate a basic proposition. This approach differs from that of Lakoff (1993) in that its focus is on metaphoric mapping within cognitive domains rather than between domains. The trick in metaphorical semantics is to learn how to detect the metaphors used in basic linguistic expressions and to construct a theory of semantics based on metaphor.

Abstract

The chief goals of this paper are two-fold: to lay out a range of complex structures in Sundanese and to assess the extent to which Englebretson’s (2003) claim regarding the absence of complementation in colloquial Indonesian can be extended to Sundanese, a neighboring language typologically related to Indonesian. In his corpus study, Englebretson argues that the colloquial Indonesian lacks (syntactic) complement clauses and two verbs/clauses can be linked via complementation strategies, including verb serialization and nominalization. Examination of Sundanese complex structures reveals that Sundanese does evince syntactic complementation and elements that Englebretson might analyze as framing elements are demonstrably arguments of a predicate. Englebretson’s account therefore cannot be maintained in Sundanese.

Abstract

There have been five congresses on Javanese language from 1991 to 2011. This indicates that there has been an effort to strengthen the Javanese identity through language engineering programs. There is an assumption that the Javanese people, especially the younger generation, nowadays tend to be monolingual than bilingual (Cohn & Ravindranath, 2014). Is Javanese language internally unable to face globalization challenges, and as a result it suffers from “impotence” and “complication”? (Djatmika, 2010). This article attempts to address the following question: What are the obstacles faced by Javanese language during its process of development? This article is based on the argument that the Javanese language planning through the language engineering program does not incorporate the ‘collective dream’ of its native speakers. The sources of data for this article come from the documents of Javanese congresses I-V and language policy documents pertaining to Javanese language preservation.

Abstract

The lexicons bae and kanai in Minangkabaunese can be combined with other verbs to form a serial verb construction, such as: bae lari ‘get running’, bae makan ‘get eating’, kanai tanyo ‘get asked’, and kanai bao ‘get brought’. The serial verb constructions bae or kanai + V in this local language bring about particular grammatical-semantic properties which need further analyses and discussion. This article, which is derived from a part of the results of a research entitled “Kemasan Makna Gramatikal dan Makna Sosial-Budaya Bahasa Minangkabau: Penyelidikan atas Tatamakna dan Fungsi Komunikatifnya”2 discusses the grammatical-semantic properties of verbal predicates in verb-phrase bae or kanai + V in the form of serial verb construction. The main question as the basis of analysis and discussion presented in this paper is ‘what are the grammatical-semantic properties of clause constructions with the predicate in verb-phrase bae or kanai + V in Minangkabaunese?’ The analysis and discussion are to explore and to explain the grammatical-typological and semantic properties of the serial verb constructions in Minangkabaunese. The data and information presented in this paper were obtained through a library and linguistic field research conducted in 2016. The analysis and discussion on the data are based on relevant theories of linguistic typology, especially the grammatical typology dealing with grammatical constructions and active-passive voice.

Abstract

A great deal of research has been conducted on genre based approach, suggesting that it is an important approach. Its importance is also indicated by the fact that it is adopted in the 2004 and 2006 National English Curricula of Indonesian secondary schools. However, the pedagogical benefit of this approach to English language teaching is still controversial. Some research has shown that it is effective to develop language competence, some has not. The fact that since the adoption of this approach in the 2004 Indonesian National Curriculum the quality of Indonesian English language teaching at Indonesian schools has not significantly improved complicates the issue further. The present study was intended to contribute to the debate. It is an experiment to discover whether the approach can help improve the performance of students in university thesis defence examinations. The study was conducted at a university level because of an important practical issue, that is complaints among members of the academic community about the poor performance of undergraduate (UG) students in the thesis defence examination (TDE) event at Indonesian universities especially in Aceh. It was believed that even though students were competent in speaking general English, they were poor in their oral thesis defence performance. This study concludes that, with some conditions, it can help at least in some respects.
